Plum Open Handle Backsaw.

Beitrag von Stewie Simpson »

The handle design is based on the Moses Eadon Dovetail Saw with changes made to suit my needs.

The handle wood is Burdekin Plum;
11" x 2 1/2" below the saw plate;
12 tpi; 5* rake angle; rip tooth.

regards Stewie;

Another very nice one, Stewie! It's a pity that you intend to cancel the saw making. I can understand you because it's a time consuming thing that lets little time for other things. BUT, remembering your start and the huge development process you've done up to now, that enables you to create beauties like this one, it's not exaggerated to state that it will be a loss for the hand saw world if you really stop the saw making.

The shown saw has a lot of character. Moses Eadon made some first class saws with rather unique designs. You captured that very good. I feel able to state that since I held the original in my hands a few years ago. BTW, Pedder is a big fan of Eadon saws, I think that he owns more than one of them. And the wood? You know that Plum is my absolute favourite handle wood. Your saw shows clearly why :-) I'm really sad not to be able to work that wonderful wood any longer due to those d...n allergy problems.

In any case I wish you all the best for the future - with saw making or without.

Klaus

Hi Klaus. I appreciate your kind words of praise. Apart from having to order some extra saw bolt assemblies, I have enough saw making stock to keep me occupied for another 18 backsaws. I wont be purchasing any further saw making stock. I have, and will never deviate from a personal need to continue refine my skills, regardless of the craft I am focused on. My next backsaw build will be treated no differently to that of the one. If I am to be remembered long after I cease making backsaws, I would hope it reflects my strong focus of encouraging others to also take up the same challenge. Learning how to sharpen your own hand saws is alway an excellent motivator. I do recall well some of my early attempts at backsaw making , and take a lot of pride in the fact that I have been able to achieve a great improvement within my work over a relatively short period of time. Your continued support during that time period has never been forgotten.

best regards; Stewie;

Hi Klaus. As an example of ongoing refinements within the way I make my backsaws, I now use chalk to highlight the final fit of the hardback within its mortise.
