Re: Peace
Of relevance to this handsaw and many other examples, the area of saw plate directly under the handle only serves a limited function.. As a result, the total length of any saw plate is not an indicator to its usable stroke length. With this backsaw for example; it may have an 18" saw plate, but with the extended heel pattern, only the front 14" of tooth line will likely see much work.

Re: Peace
Further progress made with the final shaping of this backsaw handle. Jarrah is certainly on my list of difficult Australian timbers to shape into a saw handle.

Hi Stewie, beautiful!! You know that I'm a huge fan of a proper design with consistantly flowing edges and lines combined with crisp contours. On your latest handle I can't spot the smallest imperfection. Brillant!

Re: Peace
Thank you for the compliments Klaus. As a strong observer of detail you would be well aware that I interpret the cheek to lambs tongue union much differently to that of Isaac Smith and Ron Bontz.

I noticed on a recent post that the cheek to lambs tongue connection with your new Ebony prototype handle is quite different to that shown on the Cocobolo handle you made in 2011.

Re: Peace
Many roads are going to Rome, Stewie. To my eyes the cheek/lambs tongue connection is one of the design features, where the opinions may disperse. While this feature at the shown Cocobolo handle might look "spectacular", my intention on the latest Ebony handle was to hide the actual connection area when viewing the side of the handle.

Re: Peace
Shaping work to the handle is now complete, apart from some minor touch ups to the lambs tongue to improve its flow and appearance.
I have also added a double step to the outside curvature on the bottom rail of the handle , to improve soften that transition point.
An external curve has also been added to the exposed heel of the saw plate as a means of improving its transition away from the handle.
The handle will now undergo further coats of amber shellac and light sanding in between to fill any small micro voids within the wood surface. It should also aid to further darken the final appearance of the Jarrah wood.

Re: Peace
Great saw, Stewie!
I like the design, that shines particularly at the overall pic. The saw has a very special appeal for sure. One question: my eyes may tease me but I have the impression that the top chamfer of the cheeks is slightly rounded, isn't it? Looks great anyway!

Re: Peace
Hi Klaus. The chamfer at the top of the cheek is indeed fully rounded.
