Ein besuch bei Rob Lee (LEE VALLEY) - mit Bilder

[CONGER the Irish diaspora in Munich]

Hello Holzwürme,

Während mein Urlaub (Aug. 2005) in Kanada habe ich einen 'Abstecher' zu LEE VALLEY in Ottawa gemacht.

(Ich bitte um Verzeihung... ab hier gehts auf Englisch weiter... ich stehe unter Zeitdruck).

I had arranged to meet Robin Lee (the 'boss'), who kindly offered to give my family and me the Grand Tour.

Robin is a genial character, delighted to show off his 'empire' with pride, but without the slightest element of boasting; a perfect Canadian.

He showed us the board room where the decisions are made on the 'zaniest' catalogue products offered to LV for their catalogue.
What about a counting (yes, speaking 'ONE', 'TWO', 'THREE'...) 'hackiesack'!

Then off to the tool cavern... oh dear, soooo many hand tools - anything you may think of!
Table after table after table... of hand tools.



Rob is currently having the tools catalogued.
When he is far enough, he will make up exhibits that will be sent on a rotation tour around his 12 stores; a sort of wandering museum.

Here filius has found an axe to suit. I think he has been reading too much Irish history... or maybe too little!



The man himself... and even more tools.
Later he led us to the 'sanctus sanctorum'. There were unique planes worth more than a luxury car.
He showed me one plane in ebony and ivory; he said it was valued at over $45000. Gasp!



Also on the tour, he showed us the Veritas manufacturing facility.
This is where the LV planes, and other fine tools, are manufactured.
The attention to detail was impressive. It is no wonder that the LV reputation for quality is so good!

Using his 'boss' keys, he showed me through the development department with the exciting tools in the pipeline.

LV even have their own catalog production unit (he has his own photo studion and photographers).

Four hours later we I was able to take the parting shot...



...and off around the corner to the store to flex the already overstressed credit card!

By-the-way, Robin did say that LV are planning to exhibit here in Germany next year.

After we left Ottawa, we went on to Napanee where one of my siblings has a farm with 300 meters lake frontage.

While I was there I sharpened axes (5!) by hand, and did a lot of tree surgery.
There are many trees which still show damage from a dreadful ice-rain storm they had some 6 years ago.

There is something funny about us Irish and our relationship to the land!

Hallo G,

danke frü den schönen Bericht. Aber warum kommt Rob Lee eigentlich nach Köln? Ok - seine Handwerkzeuge sind aus Metall. Aber seinen Kundenkreis würde er doch viel eher auf der Holz-Handwerk in Nürnberg treffen - die ist fast zur selben Zeit, vom 22. bis 25. März 2006. Könntest du ihn mit deinen jetzt geknüpften Beziehungen nicht zu einem Ortswechsel bewegen...??

Hallo, ich war schon mal bei der Messe. Die hatten da eigentlich alle Arten von Werkzeug (ja hauptsächlich zur Metallbearbeitung aber CNC Maschienen mit Granit Bett!! und Handwerkzeuge zum Schmieden war nicht alles). Ich hatte eine ganz "technische Messe" erwartet aber es gab ne Menge Beschläge, Nachbauten von antiken Schlössern, auch Zeirketten, Äxte, Geldschränke,... alles was so aus oder mit Metall gemacht wird. Am letzten Tag wo ich da war, gabs Ambosse im Sonderangebot, nur hatte ich und mein Vater nicht genug Geld und auch keine Bankkarte oder so dabei . Ich erger mich immer noch, hät ich dem armen Vertreter doch das Einladen ersparen können : -) (deshalb sollten die auch billiger sein).
