Hi,

"
For the most delicate polishing and cleaning work, such
as jewelry and fine crafts, the gold standard is tripoli,
also called rottenstone. Tripoli is microscopic, microcrystalline
quartz that is mined from beds of decomposed limestone.

The "Universal Technological Dictionary" of 1833(2) contained
descriptions of brass polish and terms. "Prepared chalk" was
a substance also known as "rottenstone" or "Tripoli," a fine
abrasive for metal polishing still available today under the
name rottenstone. "Tripoli" signifies the country from which
it was originally obtained. England was a 19th Century source,
with the rottenstone derived from siliceous limestone in South
Wales(3).
